Many times, clients ask if the lookup list for a master record can be sorted differently or can the list be filtered down by a particular field and stay that way the next time they access the list. This latter request will be the focus of this quarter's tech tip.

Most end users are aware that when you are in the list, you can use the F7 field filter option to pare down the list based on a combination of fields and values, as well as change the sort by selecting one of the other keys available on the table. However, after this is done, once the form is closed, it reverts back to the default list and primary sort key.

To get around this, you can apply the field filter and/or sort to the card form instead of the list. When this approach is taken, the settings are transferred to the list form and will not be lost when you close the list as the settings are attached to the card form and not the list form. As well, closing the card form will not clear those settings as they will be retained in the zup file (personal settings file) on the workstation.

To revert to the defaults; from the card form, you can click the show all icon on the tool bar to clear the field filters and/or click the sort button on the same bar and select the primary key.

Remember, this is workstation specific and does not require any programming!
